New single pathway for aged care assessments aims to simplify the process

If you've ever tried to place a loved one in residential care, you know how confusing and overwhelming the process can be. The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety found that navigating the aged care assessment process was often a challenge for families, with many being shuffled between different organisations.
To help fix this, a new system has been introduced. As of 9 December 2024, the Services Australia’s Single Assessment System has replaced the Regional Assessment Service (RAS), Aged Care Assessment Teams (ACATs), and independent assessors. This change is designed to streamline the process, giving families one clear pathway to access a range of government-funded aged care services.
The new system means that a single assessment organisation can now handle:
-
Home support assessments for the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)
-
Comprehensive assessments for the Home Care Packages Program
-
Flexible aged care programs
-
Residential respite
-
Entry into residential aged care
This should make the process easier for families, as people will no longer need to jump through multiple hoops or switch between different assessment providers. The goal is to reduce wait times, improve access to services, and ensure that even those in regional, remote, and rural areas can get the help they need.
The Single Assessment System also addresses one of the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, making the process more consistent and accessible across the country.
Under the new system, some organizations will also handle funding assessments to determine a person’s eligibility for residential aged care, ensuring they receive the right level of support once they move in.
This change is a positive step toward making the aged care system simpler, less stressful, and more accessible for families.
