Aged care worker's award-winning idea pays dividends for babies who need special care
Angela Lambie, an Administration Officer at the former Royal Freemasons Moe, was the winner of Respect's competition to find a new name for the aged care home, 130km southeast of Melbourne's CBD.
Her name idea Baw Baw Views now adorns the 144-bed home Respect announced it had agreed to buy in January 2024.
Angela's name was chosen by the community as the winning nomination.
As part of her prize, Respect committed to awarding the winner with a $2,500 in cash and a $2,500 donation to a charity of their choice.
Angela has been a proud member of the home’s staff since 2022, when she commenced as an Administration Officer.
With her role predominantly focused on supporting her colleagues by overseeing rostering and providing human relations support, her nomination of ‘Baw Baw Views’ is yet another way she has contributed to the fabric of the home’s community.
“The name immediately came to mind because it just made sense,” Angela says.
“When you look out our front doors, there is an open paddock and behind it, the amazing mountain ranges in the background.
“I thought it had a really nice ring to it and it’s fantastic to hear the name received a lot of support from the community, including being nominated a number of times.”
When ‘Baw Baw Views’ was shared back to the community via a survey featuring several other options, it proved a popular choice and collected the vast majority of public votes (approximately two thirds of all participants). Importantly, this also included the nod of approval from the home’s current residents, with more than two thirds of the cohort selecting it as their preferred option.
Angela nominated the Special Care Nursery at Latrobe Regional Health as her charity of choice, and Respect is proud to recognise the vital role the service plays for the local community with a special donation on behalf of its residents and staff.
Latrobe Regional Health’s Special Care Nursery provides specialised care and support for the most vulnerable new-born babies who require treatment for a range medical needs and conditions.
Jason Binder, Managing Director and CEO of Respect, celebrated Angela’s contribution to the home’s ongoing legacy.
“Baw Baw Views’ name-change process was about reaching out to the Moe community and giving them the opportunity to lead any change,” he said. “How wonderful to have one of our great staff members, in Angela, providing the inspiration behind our home’s popular new name."
