85% of residents would recommend their aged care home to someone
The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care's Residents’ Experience Survey Report 2022 and 2023 is a testament to the country’s 846 operators, their boards and their workforce.
The surveys, which were conducted by IQVIA in consortium with Access Care Network Australia and HealthConsult, were carried out by 37,382 residents, which represents 20% of all residents in 2,625 residential aged care homes (99%).
The results found that:
The safety, well-being and comfort of residents
- 96% felt safe in their aged care home;
- 95% felt staff treated them with respect;
- 95% felt staff were kind and caring; and
- 91% felt they got the care they needed.
The service-focused aspects of the residential experience
- 87% thought the aged care home was well run;
- 86% thought staff in their aged care home knew what they were doing;
- 82% were satisfied with how well staff responded when something was raised by them;
- 77% were satisfied with how well staff explained things to them; and
- 70% liked the food in their aged care home.
The extent to which residents live independently
- 87% of residents felt that they had a say in their daily activities, and
- 85% of residents felt they were encouraged to do as much as possible for themselves.
The autonomy responses were the most improved compared to the 2022 survey.
"More than 85% of residents would recommend their aged care home, and the majority feel they are treated with kindness and respect,” said the authors.
“Food and staffing improvements remain the biggest opportunities to further elevate the experience of residents in aged care.”
